The contribution analyzes the restoration project of the "norman gardens" in Palermo, examining the criteria and the results that have occurred from the end of the nineteenth century to today. These architectures created a constructive unicum with their gardens, identified by historiography as the "Arab-Norman" architecture of Sicily. It is interesting to note that since 2015, UNESCO has recognized "Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale" as a World Heritage Site, identifying not the individual Norman monuments, but the itinerary that connects architecture and outdoor spaces. Il saggio affronta, a partire dalla fine degli anni Venti, il tema dell'architettura in Sicilia, che si basa sulla constatazione di un grave ritardo della modernità non solo rispetto all'Europa, ma anche rispetto all'Italia. Vengono descritte le cause e le caratteristiche di questo ritardo, per giungere poi alle architetture degli anni Cinquanta, alcune delle quali esemplari nel panorama internazionale. Wooden ceilings characterize many baroque churches in Sicily and they have a particular meaning in the spatial conception of the architecture because of the false dome prospective painted on. For such a reason they are able to dominate the baroque architectural spatiality being a planar surface. Often forgotten and difficult to reach, the wooden painted ceilings represent an meaningful testimony of history and art but they are know asking for a conservation and maintenance attitude to start.
